Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment designed to help individuals who struggle with emotional dysregulation, aggression, self-harm, and other problem behaviors. DBT is an intensive, highly structured program that was originally created for adults in the 1970s and has since been adapted for children and adolescents. It can be an effective treatment for ADHD because it aids in the development of skills that support emotional regulation, problem-solving, and self-acceptance.

DBT works by helping children develop skills that decrease unwanted feelings and unhelpful behaviors, as well as skills that help them to accept difficult feelings about themselves and others without judgment. DBT patients participate in one-on-one therapy, group skills training, and/or phone coaching from their therapist. Parents learn the same skills as their children so that they can reinforce those skills outside of therapy.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About the conditions that DBT treats in children and adolescents, and who would be a good fit for this therapy
  • About DBT as a treatment model and how it works
  • How DBT can support children and adolescents in managing mood, impulsivity, and anxiety
  • About DBT strategies to support children in distress

Bad grades are not always a fair reflection of your child’s effort, learning, motivation, or potential for success. And this is especially true for students with ADHD and other learning differences. On the surface, disappointing grades represent a failure at school. But there’s usually more to the story, which may never be heard because strong emotions — for parents and students — take over.

So how can we respond more positively and thoughtfully to a bad report card? Here to suggest solutions is Ann Dolin, M.Ed., an experienced author, educator, advocate, and parent of kids with ADHD who will help parents uncover possible reasons for their child’s grades and show them how to navigate these sticky situations while preserving their relationship with their child.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • How to talk to your child about their school performance, including some easy conversation starters
  • Ways to investigate why it’s happening and the two most common reasons for poor grades
  • What to do moving forward, including strategies to help your child study more effectively and stay organized
  • Whether you should set consequences for your child’s bad grades (or reward them for good grades) and how to keep kids with ADHD motivatedRegisterNow_236x92

ADHD and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are brain-based disorders that co-exist at elevated rates. Studies have found that approximately 21% of children with OCD have ADHD as well, though some clinicians estimate an even higher co-occurrence rate. For caregivers, navigating a dual diagnosis of pediatric OCD and ADHD can be confusing and counterintuitive because these conditions may seem contradictory.

Contrary to commonly held beliefs, many pediatric OCD presentations have little or nothing to do with the fear of germs. In fact, the number one compulsion for both adults and children with OCD is avoidance. For example, a child may see school as a trigger for social phobia, causing panic and anxiety.

In this one-hour webinar, caregivers and educators will deepen their understanding of OCD and learn how to identify and support this dual diagnosis in children with ADHD.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About common misconceptions pediatric presentations of OCD, which have led to chronic underdiagnosing
  • How to identify the less common presentations of OCD, using examples of common OCD presentations in neurodivergent children
  • How OCD and ADHD can interfere with learning. For example, OCD can lead to and intensify school avoidance
  • About the treatment of concurrent OCD and ADHD, which usually involves medication, parent training, school-based accommodations, and Exposure Response Prevention therapy
  • About typical outcomes and common roadblocks to recovery

Brain fog, emotional meltdowns, and fear of dementia. Perimenopausal women with ADHD face these and myriad other challenges to brain and body due to hormonal changes during their final reproductive years. Many women, with and without ADHD, are not fully aware of the hormonal processes that start up to 10 years before menopause. During this busy time of life, many women carry great responsibility for children, aging parents, career, and family logistics. Already burdened by stress, most women assume the physical and psychiatric symptoms of perimenopause are unavoidable. At the same time, they struggle to understand and effectively treat their changing ADHD symptoms during this time of hormonal transition, which has been largely ignored by medical research to date.

All of this is true, however many researchers and clinicians continue to dismiss patients’ concerns saying that “there are no studies exploring adult or older women” or “there is no evidence to support advice on adjustment of medication or other treatment efforts for (peri)menopausal women.” It is, of course, important to base our medical advice on the best available research. But is it ethical to allow adult women with ADHD to suffer just because researchers and clinicians haven’t paid them enough attention?

We think not! That is why I’m passionate about doing the best and the most we can and to communicate the evidence that actually exists.

In this webinar, you will learn the following information to share with your clinician:

  • How the ADHD brain reacts to fluctuating hormones in vulnerable periods of the female life
  • How you can differentiate between ADHD and menopausal symptoms
  • How the “swinging” decrease of estrogen and progesterone during perimenopause can worsen ADHD symptoms and influence medication effect
  • How psychiatric and physical symptoms interplay with ADHD in (peri)menopause
  • How to treat ADHD and menopausal symptoms in adult females
  • How the ADHD life beyond menopause can look

The exact causes of ADHD are not yet known. ADHD is believed to be highly heritable —researchers have made strides in recent years identifying genes involved in the disorder — but it is also understood that ADHD may be influenced by non-inherited risk factors, such as trauma and stress. With scientific advances in the next decade or more, and perhaps with the aid of AI, we could see the diagnosis of many more subtypes of ADHD and new kinds of treatments involving novel therapies.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About the current research involving genetic influences and environmental factors associated with ADHD
  • How scientific discoveries could lead to the recognition of more than a dozen subtypes, and the implication of such findings
  • How scientific advances may one day lead to the prevention of ADHD in utero or in the first two years of life
  • About the future of promising therapies to retrain the brain to compensate for executive function weaknesses stemming from ADHD

Meet the Expert Speaker

Peter S. Jensen, M.D., founded the REACH Institute in 2006 to improve access to mental health care for children by training healthcare professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of common disorders. Previously, Dr. Jensen was an Associate Director of Child and Adolescent Research at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). He left NIMH and served as the founding director of the Center for the Advancement of Children’s Mental Health at Columbia University. While there, he developed the core methods REACH uses today to close the gap between science and practice. The strategy was to bring together leading scientists, mental health experts and agencies, primary care providers, parents, and schools to identify the best scientific findings available to help children. Then Dr. Jensen led REACH to implement, disseminate, and evaluate these methods.

The result was The REACH Institute’s first and most popular course, Patient-Centered Mental Health in Pediatric Primary Care. This course has trained more than 6,000 primary care providers to help children and teens with mental health issues.

“Avoiding & Recovering from 2e Burnout: Support for Gifted Students” [Video Replay & Podcast #467] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/signs-of-burnout-twice-exceptional-2e-students-adhd/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/signs-of-burnout-twice-exceptional-2e-students-adhd/?noamp=mobile#respond Mon, 26 Jun 2023 21:33:44 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=334581 Episode Description

The academic potential of twice exceptional students is considerable — strong memories, large vocabularies, unusual emotional depth, divergent thinking — but coexisting conditions like ADHD can complicate learning and teaching. In class, 2e children may perform above average in some areas and below average in others. The strengths and challenges can be unpredictable, making life feel chaotic and overwhelming for some students.

Identifying students who are twice exceptional, and understanding the impact of their unique hurdles, is the first step to coping with stress and avoiding burnout.

In this webinar, 2e families and teachers will learn:

  • How to work with time, structuring weeks, days, and minutes to make it less abstract to students
  • How to create systems that support your child’s success
  • How to recognize early signs of stress and prevent burnout

“Coparenting After Divorce: How to Manage ADHD Consistently Across Households” [Video Replay & Podcast #466] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/coparenting-divorce-adhd-across-households/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/coparenting-divorce-adhd-across-households/?noamp=mobile#respond Thu, 15 Jun 2023 16:56:04 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=333426 Episode Description

For parents who are divorced or contemplating a divorce, and who have children with ADHD, there are unique developmental and emotional needs to consider when figuring out how to coparent across households. Typical coparenting approaches may ignore important neurodevelopmental factors and, at worst, cause your children harm. Executive functioning is a challenge for children with ADHD and managing symptoms can be difficult when faced with heightened emotions and grief, frequent transitions, the need to track personal items, parental conflict, and dealing with new family members. Cooperation and consistency across homes is key but is not always easy or the norm.

In this webinar, caregivers will learn:

  • How to talk to your child about divorce
  • How best to handle common challenges for parents of neurodivergent children during and after divorce
  • About developmental stages and neurodivergent considerations for custody scheduling
  • How to cope with worsening ADHD behavior in your child post-divorce
  • About writing or rewriting a parenting plan to meet your child’s unique needs
  • How to manage ADHD with an uncooperative parent

Temple Grandin, Ph.D., a prominent author, scientist, and esteemed professor at Colorado State University, will talk about her journey growing up with autism in an era when children were routinely institutionalized following a diagnosis — and what helped her to follow her passions to world renown. It wasn’t until 2014 that the American Psychiatric Association revised the diagnostic criteria for autism and broadened the spectrum, which now ranges from boundary-pushing scientists and artists to individuals who need profound help with daily tasks. Grandin’s story is one of perseverance and success and has been an inspiration to many.

In this special webinar, you will learn about:

  • How autism affected Temple at a young age (hypersensitivity to noise and other sensory stimuli) through high school, college, and beyond — and the importance of early intervention
  • How understanding of and perceptions about autism have changed through the years, and how she helped to break the stigma
  • What led her to become an animal behaviorist and creator of the “hug box,” a device to improve the stress of livestock during slaughter
  • What to look for when a diagnosis is suspected
  • How she came to understand her unique perspective on the world as an “object visualizer,” as she describes in her newest book, Visual Thinking

“For Educators: Research-Based Tactics for Improving Executive Functioning in Teens” [Video Replay & Podcast #464] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/executive-functioning-skills-adhd-teens-school/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/executive-functioning-skills-adhd-teens-school/?noamp=mobile#respond Tue, 30 May 2023 14:54:26 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=331985 Episode Description

Students who have ADHD and other executive functioning deficits are often misunderstood by educators. Chances are they have late or missing assignments, and they procrastinate on long-term papers and projects. Students’ frustration with learning, organization, time management, and planning may be perceived by teachers as laziness or disinterest. This disconnect may lead to less-than-desirable academic outcomes for many students with ADHD and learning disabilities.

Teaching the skills these students lack helps them to succeed academically — and in all areas of their lives. Through repetition, self-advocacy, and staying active, students with ADHD and LDs can thrive.

In this webinar, you will learn about:

  • Research involving executive functioning skills development
  • Proven strategies to help students establish consistency and reinforce accountability through home and classroom routines
  • Actionable supports that can help level the playing field

“ADHD in the African-American Community: Strategies to Improve Care and Treatment” [Video Replay & Podcast #462] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/adhd-race-healthcare-treatment-equity/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/adhd-race-healthcare-treatment-equity/?noamp=mobile#respond Tue, 23 May 2023 22:19:18 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=332210 Episode Description

ADHD is routinely under-diagnosed in African-American children due to myriad factors, including structural inequalities in medical care and schools across the U.S. But even when ADHD is diagnosed in African-American children, it often goes untreated due to the cultural misconceptions and stigma about the disorder — and a deep distrust of the medical community — by people of color.

When ADHD is untreated in children, the risk for poor outcomes in academic and social settings increases. This is why proper diagnosis and treatment is critical for children of color. It is imperative that clinicians understand the cultural differences regarding how ADHD is perceived by Black and minority families, and use effective practices that influence appropriate treatment responses and behaviors. It is equally important that minority families understand why the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD in children is so important — and how it is tied to a child’s success.

In this webinar, clinicians, educators, and caregivers will learn:

  • Why the stigma and cultural misconceptions around ADHD impede proper treatment by families of color
  • How to bust common ADHD myths and get to the root of the problem
  • About strategies to assess and treat ADHD that align with cultural beliefs and values of minority families
  • How clinicians, educators, and caregivers can apply evidence-based practices to a clinical, educational, and home environment

What does a functionally organized home look like? For families with working parents and school-age children, it’s most essential (and difficult) to organize rooms and backpacks. For remote workers, organizing the home office is essential for your day-to-day work life. What doesn’t work: Closets filled with children’s sports equipment, school supplies, and decades-old clothing if you’re an empty nester or older adult with ADHD.

Embracing the season of life you’re in right now is one of the most creative and freeing things you can do to make your home optimally functional. In this webinar, you will:

  • Gain a better understanding of how to organize your space for each phase of life
  • Learn how to set realistic expectations so that everyone in the household can contribute to organizing spaces
  • Hear practical, easy-to-implement ideas for quick and functional changes in your kitchen
  • Learn how to make a plan for refreshing your bedroom spaces for each family member
  • Understand how to carve out a defined workspace for each family member, even if you do not have a home office or spare bedroom
