Simone Biles is the most decorated American gymnast ever and arguably the greatest American gymnast of all time. In 2022, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom — becoming the youngest person at the time to receive the nation's highest civilian honor.

When hackers leaked confidential medical records about her use of prescription drugs, she said, according to ESPN, “I have ADHD and have taken medication for it since I was a child… having ADHD, and taking medication for it is nothing to be ashamed of nothing that I’m afraid to let people know.” Bravo for normalizing the condition, Simone!

Barry Keoghan

Irish actor Barry Keoghan always suspected that he had ADHD, but it wasn't diagnosed until he was in his late twenties. "It’s something that should be recognized and talked about in adults," Keoghan told Esquire magazine. The star of the critically acclaimed movies The Banshees of Inisherin, Saltburn, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and Dunkirk credits medication for managing his symptoms. "The difference is day and night," he said. "My mind used to be like a traffic jam, crazy, and then with the medication, it’s like: One car goes, then another car goes."

Ellen Degeneres

The comedian opened up about her 'ADD' and OCD in her Netflix special, Ellen Degeneres: For Your Approval.

“My ADD makes it really hard to sit down and focus on anything at all,” she said in her stand-up show. “I mean, do you know how hard it was for me to put this together? Of course you don't. Why would I ask that question?

“So, I have ADD, I have OCD, I'm losing my memory. But I think I'm well-adjusted because I obsess on things, but I don't have the attention span to stick with it, and I quickly forget what I was obsessing about in the first place,” she added. “So, it takes me all the way around to being well adjusted, I think.”

Mark Ruffalo

The actor dealt with undiagnosed ADHD, dyslexia, and depression during his childhood. "One of the things that was very difficult for me was grade school — feeling very strange and unique and freakish, feeling like I didn't fit in anywhere," he told the Child Mind Institute.

He added: "I would say to...my younger self then that there's help and that there are ways to deal with it and to manage it and to overcome it."

Wilson is a nephew of David Neeleman, the JetBlue Airways founder who is outspoken about his own ADHD.

Daniel Kwan

The Everything Everywhere All at Once co-director learned he had ADHD after conducting research for his highly acclaimed film, which was nominated for 11 Oscars, including best picture, in 2023.

“I stayed up until like, four in the morning, just reading everything I could find about it, just crying, just realizing that, ‘Oh, my God, I think I have ADHD,’” Kwan told Salon in a 2022 interview. “So this movie is the reason why I got diagnosed.”

“This movie, obviously, when you look at it now, was made by someone with ADHD,” he added.

Trevor Noah

When Jon Stewart retired from the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning The Daily Show in 2015, few people had heard of his hand-selected replacement, Trevor Noah. Today, the South African comedian is a household name — and an entertainment juggernaut in his own rite.

Noah shared his personal struggle with ADHD and depression in a CBS interview with Leslie Stahl.

“What I've come to learn, thanks to some great therapists, is my depression is created by a severe level of ADHD,” Noah said. “If I'm not careful in how I sleep, how I eat, how I manage my routine, I can become overwhelmed and it can feel like the whole world is just too heavy to bear.”

Depression and ADHD often co-occur and, when they do, the symptoms of each condition are more acutely experienced. It’s estimated that adults with ADHD are 2.7 times more likely to have depression than the general adult population.

He told T magazine, “You get lumped in classes with kids with autism and Down syndrome, and you look around and say, ‘OK, so this is where I’m at.’ Or you get put in the typical classes and you say, ‘All right, I’m obviously not like these kids either.’ So you’re kind of nowhere. You’re just different.”

Dave Grohl

In a July 2020 YouTube video titled "In Defense of Our Teachers," the Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer revealed his childhood diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as a way of explaining his poor academic performance and early exit from high school.

"I hate to break it to you, but I was a terrible student," Grohl says. "It was no fault of the Fairfax public school system, mind you; it did the best it could. I was just stubbornly disengaged, impeded by a raging case of ADD, and an insatiable desire to play music. Far from being a model student, I did my best to maintain focus but eventually left school half way through 11th grade to become a professional touring musician — not advised. I left behind countless missed opportunities."

Best known for her roles in TV shows like Freaks and Geeks, Dawson's Creek, Cougar Town, and Girls5eva, Philipps told SheKnows that while she was diagnosed with ADHD as a child, the diagnosis was forgotten about and thus untreated until her adult years. Phillips noted that treating her rediscovered ADHD had a positive effect on her mental health. "That was the most revelatory part of the ADHD medication," she told the outlet. "My sort of low grade depression, the underlying feelings of low self worth and anxiety, juts kind of went away."

Every year he swore to himself that he would start paying attention in class and getting his homework done, but every year it seemed just as impossible as ever. It wasn't until he read The Right Stuff (#CommissionsEarned), a book about astronauts, that he found motivation to change his habits and pursue his future job. "I just decided right then and there that this is what I’m going to do," he said.
