So sorry it wasn’t a good fit but hoping things continue to improve after switching your kids back to other meds.
My 12-year-old son has been on cotemplata Xr 25.9 for 4 months – switched from Focalin XR 20 mg with reg Focalin 5 mg lunchtime booster. We noticed a subtle improvement w/ Cotempla. Lasts longer so homework battles are gone most eves. He’s also on Zoloft 125 mg for anxiety/depression to help w/ at-home nightmare behavior. Both meds combined, coupled with “Love and Logic” – ish parenting approach and LOTS of outdoor unstructured free time has helped. It’s never one thing that our kids struggle with and it’s never one thing that fixes everthing. And one sizie does NOT fit all. These ADHD meds are like jeans. A pair may look awesome on one person and terrible on another. Sigh. Soldier on, parents.
2 of my kids are on this medicine. We switched hoping for a less expensive option to Focalin XR which worked great but became so expensive & was increasingly hard to find.
My 13YO tried the 17.3mg in Nov. ‘17. It didn’t work, but we increased the dose to 25.9mg. He seemed to level off & made honor roll for the 1st time ever during 3rd quarter at school. We were very enthusiastic about it. By 4th quarter, his grades included D’s & F’s. We chalked it up to Fortnite & some other personal things. Before the school year ended it was bad- lots of missing assignments again. He was able to finish the quarter with all As, except 1 D. Summer was as bad or worse even without the schoolwork.
We just started the new school year and at 2.5wks in, his grades are terrible. Lots of missing assignments & struggles in subjects he aced previously. I tried to attribute it to him needing extra help, except he never even bothered to access his online book. 🙁
Behaviorally at home, he’s been a nightmare. It’s too much to chalk up to hormones or typical 13YO boy stuff. He’s rude, lies and is oppositional about stuff that’s ridiculous. Screaming, crying and being physically & verbally aggressive with his little sisters was the final straw. We’re headed back to our pediatrician & switching back to Concerta or generic Focalin.
Our 10 YO tried Cotempla 17.9mg 1st at the same time as her brother to save money. It was pretty bad after 1wk & we switched her back to Dexmethylphenidate. She finished the school year, achieved great results on our state assessment and tested into the gifted program. We decided to try again over summer. She switched OK, then the school year started. I didn’t know how she was doing because of the way our school grades work. I found out yesterday she has 6 missing assignments & her teachers are saying she’s lost in space a lot these days.
Behaviorally, it was the same at home. Her room is a disaster, she cries a lot, etc. I switched her back to Dexmethylphenidate today and saw a big difference already. I wanted to like Cotempla, but the cons outweigh the pros after a short time. We’ll stick with the more reliable ones. I wish Focalin brand was less expensive. It’s been the best, but was so expensive I felt we were going brankrupt on meds.
I’ve been taking Contempla at the lowest dose for 4 weeks now,at first it worked as it should,it helped with most of the symptoms related to my ADHD,its been 4 weeks as I mentioned before and this is how I feel at the 4 week mark.
when I take the medication and place it under my tongue it dissolves with in 30 seconds and takes a good hour or so to kick in,for a good two hours after I has started working I feel a huge rush of euphoria and can definitely tell the medication is working, after two hours the feeling of being really medicated does down and the medication levels out for a couple of hours before wearing off a bit more.it does not help me focus of things that need to get done as much as it did in the begining, but it’s not to bad.i have a loss of appetite but have managed that quite well by eating as much as possible and I try to drink as much as I can during the day, water that is.the medication does cause anxiety as I also suffer anxiety and have for years, but I’m learning to control that own my own,but fo take a benzo from time to time when my anxiety sparks.
the medication wears off around 3:30 and some days I notice it and some days I dont.ive tried swallowing the pill while as well.as letting it dissolve on top of my tongue and have found the best way is is on top of the tongue,as ir does not hit me as hard as it would when taken under the tongue but is not as effective during the day as when taken under the tongue.i want to continue taking this medication for a bit longer as I feel it’s worked the best for me.ive tried 5 other meds for ADHD qnd have found this one to work best
Quick history:
Diagnosed at 14 years old. Briefly medicated in High School. Attempted to treat for about a year when I was 28. Lost insurance and did not come back to treatment until I was 35.
Cotempla:
I am now a 37 year old adult who had previously been taking Concerta. That had been working great for over a year. Recently, I started noticing a decline in effectiveness with the 54mg of Concerta that I was taking. I had been a smoker for 23 years. I quit smoking around the same time that I started noticing the decline. I do not know if that was just coincidence or not.
My doctor asked if I would try Cotempla instead. He placed me on a double 25.9mg dose, which is slightly less than then 54mg I was previously taking. I have been taking it now for almost a month.
So far, I feel like I am slowly heading back to the place I was before taking Concerta. I am often finding myself back in a foggy state. I seem to have a burst of focus in the morning but by noon, I am struggling to focus on any one task. Due to that, I am finding myself having great anxiety about not accomplishing what I need to do.
During the time that Concerta was effective; I was having great success. I was managing to accomplish great things at work. I was prioritizing and very focused. I was almost always finished with everything I needed to do by 5pm. It was a GREAT feeling! Now, I am drifting so much that I am having to work in the evenings and weekends to make up for the time I drift. This also causes me to lose sight of not work things. So, I am in a cycle of feeling behind both personally and at work.
To be quite honest, I was struggling to even complete this review.
I am curious if any other ADHD adult has had this experience with Cotempla or in general?
I understand its early to add a review, but I thought I would since there are non available. I was able to get the first month free with a coupon. I’m 42 years old and was able to use the coupon even though it said only good for ages 6-17. The medication does dissolve on my tongue. It has a nice grape flavor. If you are sensitive to fake med tastes you might not like it. It takes about 30 seconds to be completely dissolved. It came on strong for the first hour. Then it evens out. I was able to eat after taking it with no problems. So far it seems to be helping with keeping me focused. If I was a child taking it I probably wouldn’t mind the taste. It might be a good idea to give it to a child when they first wake up and then let them sit and eat something while the medication evens out. It might help to let them watch TV so by the time a half hour show is over the medication has settled down. As I take this more I will edit my review.
